Vancouver Island University is a public teaching and research university in Canada with a long history. Since 1936, we have addressed the needs of Vancouver Island with programs that improve lives in coastal BC.
We believe the doors to a university education should be open to everyone. We believe in the power of personal connection and kindness. We value diversity of thought, identity and experience.
VIU has grown and adapted to changing times, extending our reach and impact while still focusing on the local community. Our success is best measured by the strength of our community and the achievements of our students.
At VIU, education is personal. Small class sizes ensure professors know your name and are invested in your success. This teaching-focused environment prioritizes meaningful student-faculty relationships, offering more opportunities for hands-on learning, direct feedback, and mentorship. You are part of a community where your voice matters, transforming your life through dedicated individual support.
VIU offers 120+ programs ranging from certificates and trades to master's degrees. Disciplines include Arts, Business, Health Sciences, and specialized Indigenous programs. With options in Science, Technology, and Applied Trades like Automotive or Welding, students can customize their education. Whether starting with ESL or pursuing a degree, our breadth allows every learner to reach their goals.
VIU welcomes over 1,600 international students from 85 countries, creating a rich global perspective on campus. Comprehensive supports, including immigration advising and ESL pathways, ensure success for all. By blending international diversity with strong local Indigenous connections, VIU fosters deep cross-cultural competence, preparing graduates for global citizenship and careers in an interconnected world.
VIU connects the classroom to the real world through co-ops, internships, and active field studies. Students conduct research in diverse settings, from rainforests to clinical rotations, gaining valuable hands-on skills. Our focus on work-integrated learning and career services ensures graduates are workforce-ready. Many students build professional networks and secure stable employment even before their graduation day.
Located in stunning British Columbia, VIU’s three campuses offer inspiring natural environments. From the ocean views of Nanaimo to the forest settings of Cowichan and Powell River, our locations serve as natural laboratories. Students enjoy a mild climate and world-class outdoor recreation like hiking and kayaking, enhancing their well-being while studying in safe, vibrant coastal communities.
