Answer Snapshot:

The Australia July intake (Semester 2) starts in late July at most universities, with some courses beginning in early August. Many universities close mid-year applications between April and May, but deadlines differ by university and course. For a July 2027 start, aim to apply by February to March 2027 so you have time to accept your offer, receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and lodge your student visa.

The July intake is the second main entry point to Australian universities after February. It suits students who finish school results mid-year, need extra time for English tests, or missed the February deadlines. This guide explains how the July 2027 intake works, a realistic timeline for students applying from the UAE and the Gulf, and the visa and money checks to plan for.

Which courses offer a July intake?

Most large Australian universities run a Semester 2 intake, but not every course opens in July. Programs with a fixed sequence, such as some health, medicine and teaching degrees, often start only in February. Business, IT, engineering, science and many master’s degrees are more likely to offer July entry.

  • Check the intake list on each course page, not just the university home page.
  • Confirm whether a mid-year start changes your course length or the order of subjects.
  • Ask whether a pathway or foundation program has a July start if you need extra preparation.

WhenWhat to do
November to December 2026Shortlist courses, check July 2027 availability and English test requirements. Book IELTS, PTE or TOEFL if needed.
January to February 2027Submit applications with transcripts, passport and test results. Apply for any scholarships with early deadlines.
March to April 2027Accept your offer, pay the deposit, arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and receive your CoE.
April to May 2027Lodge your subclass 500 student visa with financial evidence and health insurance details.

If you are already late, you may still find courses open in April or May. Visa processing times change, so applying earlier gives you more room if the Department asks for extra documents.

Student visa and money checks

For a subclass 500 visa you will usually need your CoE, Overseas Student Health Cover, evidence that you are a genuine student and proof that you can pay for your study and living costs. The Department of Home Affairs lists the living cost amount as AUD 29,710 for 12 months for the main applicant, plus first-year tuition and travel. The base visa application charge rose to AUD 2,500 on 1 July 2026.

  • Keep bank statements and sponsor letters consistent with the amount you declare.
  • Check that names and dates match across your passport, CoE and financial documents.
  • Read the current rules on the official subclass 500 page before you lodge.

July or February: which intake should you choose?

February has the widest course choice and the most scholarships. July can be the better choice if you need time to finish exams, improve your English score or save money. Compare both intakes for your course before deciding. Our Australia February intake guide shows the alternative timeline, and the Study in Australia page lists universities we work with.

Frequently asked questions

Is the July intake smaller than February?

Yes. Fewer courses open in July and some scholarships are only offered for February. Many popular degrees still accept mid-year students.

Can I apply for July if I missed the February deadline?

Often yes. Check whether your course has a Semester 2 start and when mid-year applications close.

How early should I lodge my student visa?

Lodge as soon as you have your CoE. Earlier lodgement leaves time for health checks or extra document requests.

Do I need to show the full AUD 29,710 in my account?

The figure is the living cost amount for the main applicant for 12 months. You also need to show tuition and travel. Follow the current Department guidance on accepted evidence.
